You are convinced that someone or something has stuck a red-hot poker into your body.

Of course, we know that hasn’t really happened, but the effect is the same. The chances are that it will take some time for you to return to your task. By the time you have shifted around in your chair, held the offending area of your body, tried to get up and walk around, and generally felt fed up with the whole situation, you have lost all track of what you were doing. Can Office Chairs Cause Back and Hip Pain?

Choose the wrong type of chair, and the answer is a resounding YES.

There are so many chairs available, but not all of them are suitable for your medical condition. Choose a chair with a fixed back, and your seated position is “locked” into the shape that the chair dictates. Choose one that doesn’t have adjustable height, and your legs could end up in unnatural positions. How about a neck rest? Many medical complaints may seem to be concentrated in one area, but the knock-on effect means your spine and neck can be very uncomfortable.

Why do my hips and back hurt when I sit in my office chair?

The most common reason that most people suffer from back and hip pain when sitting (and that includes you…) is because they slouch. You may not mean to, and when you first sit in your chair, you probably make a conscious effort to sit correctly. But life tends to get in the way! You become engrossed in work, or your phone rings or someone brings you a coffee or tea. Suddenly, you relax and start to slide into what you think is a comfortable position. But of course, it isn’t.

By slouching, more pressure is exerted onto your hips and lower back. Within a very short time, your pain returns, and you wonder why you allowed yourself to fall into the trap that you’ve experienced many times before. So, despite your best efforts, your habit of sitting incorrectly has caused you extreme discomfort yet again. This leads us to ask the question:

How long can you sit in an office chair?

I suppose there is no definite answer to this question, as we all differ in size, stature, and health. However, what we do know is that more and more people are working from home these days. This means that the time spent in front of a computer screen has probably increased. Contrary to popular belief, most people produce more when working from home than when in an office environment.

You know the score when going to your office…you turn up in the morning, head for the kettle, have a chat about last night’s football, listen to other people’s moans and groans, then make your way to your workstation. And suddenly, you realize that twenty minutes have been taken from your day. Come mid-morning, someone shouts, “who’s for a coffee?” and another twenty minutes pass you by. Lunchtime is another distraction that can take anything from 20 to 60 minutes to complete your eating and chatting program. Then, of course, you simply must have another coffee mid-afternoon. I’m sure you get the picture.

Then don’t forget the pointless meetings! You all sit around trying to look important, listening to someone who thinks he or she is important. Then there are the meetings about meetings when instead of being bored out of your mind, you could be elsewhere being productive.

And so I’m sure you will understand that providing you are self-disciplined, you actually achieve more at home. But this comes with the disadvantage of remaining in a sitting position for longer. And so, no matter whether you remain seated for one hour or eight, you must ensure that you use the correct chair. Failure to do so will, without fail, lead to back and hip problems.

Can office chairs be used for leisure?

Again, the answer is a resounding YES.

  1. I work from home and sit by my computer for most of the day.  So, as you can imagine my back gets pretty stiff and sore.  I try to get up and walk around every now and then, but that doesn’t always help, as my office chair could use an upgrade!

The Hinomi chair sounds really good, and it’s really great to see a company stand behind their products and offer a 15-year warranty.  That’s pretty impressive, you don’t see many companies offer that.  This chair is definitely something I will be considering.

    • Hello Jenny, many thanks for your positive reply. I can only speak as I find, and Hinomi chairs certainly fit the bill for comfort.
